THE STRESS-FREE AMALFI COAST: ALTERNATIVE ROUTES AND INSIDER TIPS

Want to visit the Amalfi Coast but fear you'll find yourself jostling among crowds of busy tourists and won't be able to enjoy it properly? Relax! Here are our insider tips to help you experience the magic of the Divine Coast without crowds and without stress!

by R. Cascone

The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy's most visited and trendy destinations: every year, millions of tourists want a taste of “La Dolce Vita” in the most glamorous place there is! Breathtaking views, colourful villages perched on cliffs, towns rich in art and culture, incredible cuisine... these are just some of the attractions of this corner of paradise. For all these reasons, it is also one of the most crowded and chaotic places to visit, but don't worry! Here are some practical tips to help you enjoy your holiday on the coast to the fullest - and without stress!

1. When to go?

As I suggested here, there are better times than others to visit the Amalfi Coast. Our daily commitments don't always allow us to travel at the most convenient times, but if you can, keep in mind that the spring and fall months are the most favorable: mild weather, fewer crowds even in the most popular villages, and more affordable prices. Another useful tip is to avoid traveling on weekends and long weekends, which are the only option for many people who work in offices.

2. Where to stay

If you want to stay away from the hustle and bustle, you can start by choosing one type of accommodation over another. You could opt for quieter villages such as Scala, Agerola, Tramonti, Conca dei Marini, or the oldest hamlet of Positano, Nocelle. There are several advantages to staying here: silence, ease of finding parking, and, above all, authenticity. For example, you could look for a family-run farmhouse or B&B: you will get to know the locals better and - rest assured! - they will have lots of useful advice for you about the coast, the best restaurants, and things to do in the surrounding area.

3. Alternative routes

To enjoy a relaxing vacation, you need to get off the beaten track and follow alternative itineraries to the classic destinations! The Amalfi Coast is much more than just Positano and Amalfi: here are some suggestions.

- Among the less touristy villages are certainly those in the hills, such as Tramonti, Agerola, and Scala. Here you will find ancient churches, characteristic squares and alleys; delicacies to taste, such as the provolone del monaco from Agerola and the pizza that made the history of Tramonti; and green areas from which to admire views of incredible beauty.

- Do you enjoy outdoor activities? Then you can explore the many coastal trails, from the longest and most picturesque, such as the Path of the Gods and the Ferriere Valley, to those hidden among the villages, such as the Path of Lemons or the Sentiero della Volpe Pescatrice (literally the Path of the Fishing Fox!) in Furore (for more information, read the “Fun facts” box below). If, on the other hand, you like adventure, you could try the lesser-known but super-fascinating trails, such as the one leading to the Torre dello Ziro or the one to the Santuario dell'Avvocata

- Other stops not to be missed are the seaside villages of Cetara, Furore, and Praiano.
Cetara is a fishing village that has retained its authenticity: clustered around the marina, with its small port and beach overlooked by the Viceregal Tower, it is the ideal place to stop for lunch by the sea. Remember to order spaghetti with the famous colatura d'alici (anchovy sauce)! You won't regret it!
Furore does not have a real center, but it is home to one of the most iconic places on the Amalfi Coast: the fjord! Don't miss a visit to this natural inlet: it is definitely one of the most evocative places in the area.
Praiano also has many beautiful things to offer! One of these is San Gennaro Square, a terrace with an incredible view of the coast, overlooked by the Church of San Gennaro and its majestic majolica dome. The marina is also very characteristic: nestled between the rocks, the white pebbles and fishing boats make it one of the most unique beaches here on the Coast.

4. How to get around without stress

It should never be forgotten that all the villages are located along a coastline that is often steep and rugged: as a result, the roads connecting them—especially State Road 163—are narrow and full of hairpin turns. This is certainly not ideal for those who want to avoid chaos (it can become very busy in high season) and stress. My advice is therefore to travel by sea! The Travelmar ferry company connects all the main ports and also offers useful additional services such as a ferry + shuttle combination to take you directly to Path of the Gods! What's more, and this is no small detail, Travelmar ferries offer a unique view of the Amalfi Coast from the sea!

5. Customized experiences

To enrich your stress-free trip to the Amalfi Coast, there are still a few things to consider: experiences! Today, experiences refer to all those activities you can do on vacation in close contact with the locals. They help you make friends, learn about the culture and traditions of the country you are visiting, and above all, create lasting memories! There are many things you can do on the Amalfi Coast: cooking classes, walks through lemon groves, visits to wineries, or even climbing, biking, and kayaking! In short, there really is something for everyone. If you want to learn more, click on the links in the box below.

In short, despite its popularity, there are many ways to experience the Amalfi Coast in an intimate, authentic, and stress-free way. With the right precautions, you can avoid the crowds and chaos and at the same time discover a more authentic, less touristy, but still incredibly charming side of the coast.
