THE "SLOW" AMALFI COAST: 7 AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCES TO ENJOY OUT OF SEASON

We are in that time of year commonly referred to as the ‘low season’: the summer chaos has finally left the villages, the pace of life is slower, and it is now that the Amalfi Coast reveals its most authentic side. Read the article to discover some unmissable ‘slow’ experiences so you can enjoy the magic of the coast in complete peace and tranquillity!

As I suggested in this article, autumn and spring are the best times to visit the Amalfi Coast! The villages, even the most popular ones such as Positano and Amalfi, are now free from the large crowds of tourists that invade them in summer. Without the hustle and bustle that is typical of the high season, the whole coast becomes more accessible and pleasant to visit, and it is easy to get to know its most authentic and genuine aspects. Here are some “slow” experiences I recommend so you can fully appreciate it!

1. Walks through the lemon groves

One of the symbols par excellence of the Amalfi Coast is the lemon: omnipresent in every home, it is the star ingredient in many traditional dishes and is grown directly on the hills of the area. What if I told you that you can book walks and tastings right where these fragrant citrus fruits grow?
With Amalfi Lemon Experience, for example, you can visit a lemon grove together with the farmers who work there, where they will explain all the stages of cultivation and harvesting. L'Altra Costiera will also reveal the secrets of the “sfusato amalfitano”, as the variety of lemons typical of the coast is called, as well as giving you the opportunity to visit a distillery that produces the much-loved limoncello.
In both cases, you will be offered local lemon-based specialties to satisfy even the most discerning palates!

2. Wine cellar tours

If you like the idea of visiting lemon groves, combining nature with good food, then you'll probably also be interested in wine cellar tours! The terraces typical of the Amalfi Coast are also home to rows and rows of vines, which produce some of Italy's finest wines.
One of the experiences not to be missed is a visit to the wineries that produce them! From walks through the vineyards to tasting the finished product, these tours are among the most authentic experiences you can have on the coast. Here are some wineries that organise them:
- Marisa Cuomo Winery in Furore, one of Italy's best wineries with its award-winning wines;
- Vigne di Raito in Vietri sul Mare;
- Tenuta San Francesco in the green Tramonti.

3. Panoramic trekking without crowds

The villages of the Amalfi Coast have ancient origins and still possess many hidden paths immersed in nature that were once used by locals to get around when modern roads did not exist yet. For example, in Furore there is the Sentiero della Volpe Pescatrice (literally the Trail of the Fishing Fox), which connects the ancient village to the famous fjord. Moreover, between Maiori and Minori there is a short but enchanting path that once connected the two towns by land, called the Sentiero dei Limoni (the Lemon Path).
If, on the other hand, you are looking for more challenging trails, the Path of the Gods and the Valle delle Ferriere are the best choice, and without the crowds of the high season, they are even more impressive!

4. Stress-free cultural visits

Autumn days are ideal for taking a few cultural tours of sites that are usually crowded during the high season. Among the most popular is undoubtedly the MAR in Positano, an ancient patrician villa just below the town's church! Minori also hides a treasure for all lovers of history and ancient art: another Roman seaside villa, of which fascinating traces still remain. To complete your visit, take a look at the Antiquarium, which preserves frescoes and archaeological materials found in the area.
The Amalfi Paper Museum, on the other hand, is interesting for those who want to learn more about the traditions and past of the ancient maritime republic. But that's not all! Here you can also take part in a hands-on experience: create your own sheet of Amalfi paper!

5. Learn local cuisine with a cooking class

One of the most popular experiences on the Amalfi Coast is cooking classes, where you can learn how to prepare traditional dishes alongside the best chefs. It's a true combination of flavours and skills! Here are some suggestions:
- Amalfi Lemon Experience, where you can try your hand at lemon-based dishes;
- La Fattoria La Tagliata in Positano, where everyone cooks together to the rhythm of music;
- Amalfi Gardens, which also offers lessons in... pizza!

6. Relaxing day trips in the sorroundings

The low season is also the perfect time to visit some of the most popular tourist destinations: Capri, Pompeii and Sorrento become much more accessible without the summer crowds. With fewer people around, you can truly enjoy the uniqueness of these places and experience them in a more authentic and peaceful way. What's more, all these destinations are easily accessible from the Amalfi Coast. If you want to find out how to get there and what you can do once you arrive, read our dedicated article.

7. Discover lesser-known villages

Not all destinations on the Amalfi Coast are equally popular: some are less touristy than others, and are even more authentic and peaceful out of season. If you want to know what life is really like for the locals, I recommend visiting these places in the autumn and winter months. Villages such as Atrani, Minori, Scala and Tramonti have so much to offer, whether from an artistic, cultural or, last but not least, culinary point of view!

So, don't wait any longer! Come to the Amalfi Coast out of season: you'll be surprised!
