The ever-present patron saint festivals
Religious traditions are very important to the residents of the Amalfi Coast: that’s why patron saint festivals are celebrated without fail every year, and are always among the most popular and beloved events for locals! With processions, liturgical masses, and singing, these are also the perfect opportunities for visitors to experience authentic and deeply felt events: the best way to get to know the coastal villages and, above all, the people who live there! Some of the most exciting and engaging patron saint festivals take place during the summer months: here they all are!
- June 24 – Feast of St. John the Baptist, patron saint of Vietri sul Mare. In Vietri sul Mare, it is said that on the night between June 24 and 25, a “burning beam” falls into the sea, finally making the water just right for the first swims of the year: this is the very night of St. John the Baptist, the town’s patron saint, for whom the village is festively decorated. During the day, the statue of the saint is carried in a procession, and in the evening, fireworks displays are held! If you’re curious to learn more, read our dedicated article.
- June 27: Feast of Saint Andrew the Apostle, patron saint of Amalfi. Saint Andrew is so important to the city of Amalfi that he is celebrated on two occasions during the year: June 27 and November 30. The summer ceremony specifically commemorates a miracle performed by the saint, who stepped in to defend the city against an invasion by Turkish pirates (I’ve told you all about it at this link!) The most special and moving moment of the event is undoubtedly the procession of the saint, which ends with the traditional run of the devotees up the famous steps of Amalfi Cathedral: thousands gather in the square to watch, so if you don’t want to miss it, I recommend getting there well in advance!
- June 29: Feast of Saint Peter, patron saint of Cetara. The seaside village of Cetara comes alive at the end of June for the feast of its patron saint, the protector of fishermen! Fishing is, in fact, at the heart of Cetara’s entire culture: this is why the festival on June 29 is particularly cherished (if you’d like to learn more about the connection between the saint and the people of Cetara, read this article). Here, the saint is carried in a procession not only through the streets of the village but even out to sea by the fishermen of Cetara to wish them a bountiful catch! A truly unique spectacle that ends with fireworks reflecting on the water.
- July 22: Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene, patron saint of Atrani. On our list of must-see patron saint festivals, we simply cannot leave out the one dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene, the patron saint of the tiny village of Atrani. On July 22, the statue of the saint is enthroned and carried in a procession; but that’s not all: in the evening, there is a blessing of the sea and the customary fireworks display. Fun fact! On this date, the people of Atrani also celebrate in the kitchen: a traditional part of the patron saint’s celebration is, in fact, the preparation of the delicious sarchiapone. Check it out here!
June 11 – July 9, 2026: Positano: Mare, Sole e Cultura
Book lovers, this event is for you! With various events throughout June and July, you’ll have the chance to attend book presentations and high-caliber literary gatherings, all set against the stunning backdrop of Piazza Flavio Gioia in Positano. The Mare, Sole e Cultura (that is Sea, Sun and Culture) literary festival is chaired by Aldo Grasso and transforms the village of Positano into a true literary salon, where topics from the past and present will be discussed in a refined atmosphere.
July 4 – September 5, 2026: 74th edition of the Ravello Festival
One of Italy’s most prestigious music festivals, the Ravello Festival transforms the town into an open-air stage every summer. In stunning locations such as the Belvedere of Villa Rufolo and Piazza Duomo, this year’s 74th edition of the Festival presents world-class opera and symphonic performances. If you’re a lover of classical music and composers like Wagner, don’t miss the chance to attend the event… with the most beautiful view in the world right before your eyes!
Last weekend of July 2026: The Night of the Lampare in Cetara
Every year, the last weekend of July becomes the setting for one of the oldest and most fascinating traditional coastal festivals: the Night of the Lampare! On this occasion, participants can enjoy a truly authentic experience: boarding ferries and heading out to sea to take part in a fishing expedition alongside the “lampare,” the small fishing boats named after the lamps used to lure fish to the surface. In this case, of course, the catch consists of anchovies, from which the famous colatura is produced. The Night of the Lampare is not just a fishing event, but also an opportunity for the Cetara community to come together and enjoy a summer evening, with traditional dishes and the rhythm of folk music.
August 1–4, 2026: Luminarie of Saint Domenico in Praiano
Probably the most enchanting event of all, the Luminarie of Saint Domenico (that we could translate into "Saint Domenico's lights") take place every August in Praiano: thousands of candles and torches light up San Gennaro square, the narrow streets, and the stairways of the village. The roots of this festival date back to the 17th century, when Dominican friars from Naples brought the cult of the saint here to Praiano, and it is linked to an ancient and mysterious legend (which we told you about here!). Attending the Luminarie is a truly unique experience: don’t miss this opportunity if you want to experience romantic moments of incredible charm!
August 15, 2026: Ferragosto in Positano
Want to spend an unforgettable Ferragosto? Come to Positano! Every year, Ferragosto here is a truly unmissable event, featuring a fireworks display over the sea in the world’s most famous coastal village. I also recommend arriving in Positano well in advance if you want to attend, and above all, keep an eye on the Travelmar ferry company’s website to get around stress-free and avoid parking issues!
Late August – Early September 2026 – Byzantine New Year, Amalfi
Do you enjoy historical reenactments and costume events? Then you simply can’t miss the Byzantine New Year in Amalfi! In late August, the city celebrates its glorious past: medieval banners and coats of arms decorate the entire town, and parades in period costumes take place in the squares and alleys. As I’ve described in detail here, it’s like stepping back in time to the era of the Maritime Republics! In addition, on this occasion, a Magister of Amalfi Culture is elected—that is, a resident or native of Amalfi who has distinguished themselves for their skills and merits: it is a true honor to receive this title! This year’s program hasn’t been released yet: keep an eye on the Amalfi municipal website at this link to stay updated.
- Be sure to check the Travelmar ferry company’s website: extra runs are scheduled for the most popular events, so you can attend them without any stress!
