The Amalfi Coast
How to choose the right area: an overview
Every village on the Amalfi Coast has a different soul, and every traveler has their own preferences: some love breathtaking views, others seek nightlife, while others want absolute silence around them. Before deciding where to book your accommodation, consider these factors!
First of all, what kind of vacation are you looking for? If you want to go to the beach, you will have to make certain choices, but if you prefer a relaxing or cultural vacation, you will have to make different ones. Your budget is also crucial: there can be significant differences between a more popular destination and a less touristy one. Always keep in mind that the time of year affects your budget! In high season (June-September), prices are higher almost everywhere. Finally, remember to consider transportation: if you plan to get around by public transport, that's one thing, but things change if you have a car at your disposal.
Once you've established your needs, everything will be easier, you'll see!
The main towns and what they offer
- Amalfi
Amalfi is the heart of the coast: its long history makes it the main town of the Divine Coast. Here you will find all the services you need: restaurants, ferries (such as those operated by Travelmar!), museums and churches, shops... everything is within easy reach! What's more, it is very easy to travel to the other villages from here, both by sea and by land. Amalfi is therefore the ideal choice for those who want to be at the center of the Amalfi Coast, close to everything, especially if you plan to use public transport. - Positano
Positano is simply a gem! Scenic, romantic, but at the same time very touristy: it is a unique village and therefore also one of the most expensive places to stay. Here you are spoiled for choice between boutique hotels and apartments with sea views: every accommodation will leave you breathless! If you want to book in Positano, however, remember the stairs and the many uphill streets. It is not accessible to everyone, and this is a factor that should not be underestimated. - Ravello
If you are looking for elegance but also peace and quiet, Ravello is the destination to consider. Here you are in the hills and spectacular views are around every corner. It is also rich in historic villas and belvederes, and is ideal for music lovers: throughout the year, musical events are organized in the Niemeyer Auditorium or in Villa Rufolo... attending them is simply marvelous! - Minori and Maiori
Often underestimated, Minori and Maiori are two seaside villages that have a lot to offer: they are definitely the ideal choice for those with mobility issues or families with children. Quiet and authentic, they have wide beaches accessible to all and accommodation is usually good value for money. It is also easy to get around by public transport from here, particularly with Travelmar ferries: I'll leave the link in the box below! - Praiano, Furore and Conca dei Marini
Undoubtedly charming and halfway between Amalfi and Positano, we find the three villages of Praiano, Furore, and Conca dei Marini. Here, it is advisable to have a car or travel by bus, as they are a little far from the main coastal attractions. On the other hand, they are the ideal choice for those who prefer peace and quiet and want to enjoy breathtaking views of the coast. - Cetara
A seaside village par excellence, Cetara is truly a gem. Small and less touristy, your experience here will certainly be more authentic and peaceful. The beach is just a short walk from the center, and here too you will find Travelmar ferries that can take you to other destinations. It is the ideal choice for those who want to experience the coast close to the sea but at the same time avoid the large crowds. - Scala, Tramonti, Agerola
The “green” villages of the Amalfi Coast are located in the hills behind the rugged coastline. Scala, Tramonti, and Agerola are ideal for those seeking peace and quiet and good food; they are also perfect for trekking and nature lovers. Finally, they are more affordable, although you will need a car or public buses to get around.
Types of accommodation: choose the right one for you!
After listing all the pros and cons of the main coastal villages, let's analyze the different types of accommodation you can find there.
- Obviously, as the Amalfi Coast is one of the most famous and renowned holiday destinations in Italy, there are many luxury hotels to stay in. These offer all kinds of services, such as private beaches, spas, and in-house restaurants. They are ideal for honeymoons or short stays, given the generally high prices, or to celebrate a special occasion. Among some of the most popular are the Hotel Caruso or Palazzo Avino in Ravello, the Monastero Santa Rosa in Conca, the Hotel Treville or the Sirenuse in Positano... there are many to choose from and they are all of the highest standard!
- B&Bs and guesthouses are another excellent choice: they usually offer good value for money, have a more familiar atmosphere (they are often locally run), and are ideal for those seeking a more authentic experience, in contact with the locals. There are so many to choose from: pick yours bearing in mind what I recommended in the previous paragraph!
- If you have children with you, you should probably consider a vacation home or apartment: you will have complete freedom, you can cook your own meals, and they are definitely more suitable for long stays. Always pay attention to location and accessibility! There may often be inconvenient stairways to reach them; also, I recommend booking well in advance if you plan to visit the coast during high season.
- Last but not least, there is the agriturismo! Mainly available inland and therefore in hilltop villages, agritourism is the ideal choice for those who want peace and quiet and to be in contact with nature. Perfect for an immersive experience in autumn and winter and for slow travelers (read the box below for more info)!
Types of accommodation: choose the right one for you!
Before clicking on “book,” keep these practical tips in mind!
- It may seem obvious, but it's important: always book your vacation well in advance, especially if it's between May and September. This is the busiest period on the coast, and accommodation fills up quickly!
- Always remember to check the accessibility of your accommodation: many have stairs or are located at the top of steep hills, and older buildings may not have elevators.
- Check the parking situation! It's not always easy to find parking on the Amalfi Coast.
- Finally, check the opening hours of hotels, restaurants, and museums to avoid unpleasant surprises!
Now that you have all the necessary information, you can proceed with your booking! Every village on the coast has its own charm, but choosing the right accommodation will ensure that your stay is unforgettable! Whether you want sea, culture, or silence, there is always a corner of the coast that is perfect for you.
