THE GREEN AMALFI COAST: CONSCIOUS TOURISM AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Are you, like 5 million other tourists, planning a trip to the Amalfi Coast this year? If so, read this article to learn how to visit the Amalfi Coast in a conscious and environmentally sustainable way!
by R. Cascone
The Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 (as I mentioned here), welcomes approximately 5 million visitors each year. These numbers obviously have a significant impact on the region, both economically and in terms of its social and ecological aspects. This is precisely why there has been increasing talk in recent years about responsible tourism: but what exactly is it? Keep reading to find out more!

The Amalfi Coast in the world
The Amalfi Coast is a region of extraordinary natural and cultural value; at the same time, it is highly fragile and subject to significant demographic pressure, especially during the summer months. In recent years, as attention to environmental issues has grown, the impact of increasing tourist traffic has made it all the more urgent to rethink the local development model: it is in this context that the idea of conscious and eco-sustainable tourism on the Amalfi Coast was born. But how can this be achieved?
Finding a balance: is it possible?
The main goal of conscious and eco-sustainable tourism is to (re)establish a balance among various elements: environmental protection, the promotion of the local area, and the well-being of local communities. There are many initiatives and various areas where improvements can be made: let’s take a closer look!
One of the main areas of focus is mobility: as you know, coastal roads are narrow and often congested; for this reason, air and noise pollution can become a problem at certain times of the year. The solution could be to promote and use low-impact modes of transportation, such as electric buses, shared shuttles, and ferries (like our super-convenient Travelmar ferries!), a highly effective way to reduce road traffic congestion.
Another factor that should not be underestimated is waste management, since an increase in visitors also leads to an increase in waste production. What can be done about this? First of all, we need to invest in recycling, reduce single-use plastic, and raise awareness among tourists and residents, promoting responsible behavior to preserve the environment. In this regard, I must mention a project launched by the Amalfi Coast Tourism District Association called Zero Waste Amalfi Coast. What does it entail?
Zero Waste Amalfi Coast
The Zero Waste project was launched in 2022 as a collaboration between the Amalfi Coast Tourism District, Hotel Rifiuto Zero, and the Omega Consortium—all organizations dedicated to consulting and the sustainable management of tourism and hospitality operations. In this initiative, waste is not viewed merely as trash, but as a resource: thus, lemon and orange peels, along with other food waste such as coffee grounds, become a source of clean energy! Of course, the project also aims to raise public awareness and train hoteliers and their staff in a series of best practices to adopt, ranging from eliminating single-use items to installing recycling bins that guide guests in sorting their waste. Many hotels have already joined the initiative: only in this way can a virtuous cycle be created for the entire community and the surrounding area.
Other initiatives for sustainable tourism
What else can be done besides recycling and eco-friendly transportation? Well, actually, quite a lot! For example, promoting authentic experiences tied to local culture, crafts, and traditional products would help spread tourist traffic throughout the year, avoiding seasonal overcrowding. Visiting the Amalfi Coast, in fact, is always a magical experience, especially during the “off-season”! Here I’ve told you about the many experiences you can have to make your trip more authentic than ever, while here I’ve listed the benefits of visiting the Amalfi Coast in autumn and spring: you’ll discover an unexpected yet equally fascinating side of the region!
Also, when planning your trip, try—if possible—to book your accommodation at eco-friendly establishments that adopt practices such as energy conservation or the use of sustainable materials: you’ll truly make a difference!
For a greener future
In short, individual action is essential for responsible and eco-sustainable tourism to become a reality. Protecting the landscape and biodiversity, supporting local agriculture, and involving the local community are all essential steps toward achieving the primary goal: preserving an environmental and landscape heritage that is unique in the world.
