The Piazzetta by night
1. Strolling through the Piazzetta and along the elegant streets of the town center
The heart of the town of Capri is the famous Piazzetta, easily accessible from the port of Marina Grande by funicular or by the minibuses that run throughout the island. Piazza Umberto I (its official name) welcomes you with its elegant clock tower, some cafés and the town hall, and serves as the hub of the island’s social life. But that’s not all: from the colonnade surrounding the Piazzetta, you’ll enjoy a stunning view of the sea—and if you wait for sunset, it will be even more spectacular! In addition, starting from here, you can explore the most elegant streets lined with luxurious boutiques—symbols of Capri’s fashion scene around the world—with Via Camerelle being the most famous; but a short walk will also take you to the charming Via Tragara, a scenic road known for its breathtaking views of the sea, leading all the way to Punta Tragara, a promontory from which you can admire an equally unmissable landscape.
2. Admiring the Faraglioni, from land and sea
You’ve surely seen photos of these three rocks, Capri’s most iconic symbols worldwide. The name Faraglioni comes from the Greek word faros, meaning lighthouse. In ancient times, large fires were lit here to signal their presence to sailors, and over the centuries, they have been shaped by the action of water and other natural forces. The Faraglioni appear in countless paintings and films, which have boosted their popularity among the public. Anyone visiting Capri, therefore, simply can’t help but look for them! To admire them at their best, the ideal way is to take a boat tour of the island (many depart from the port of Marina Grande) or view them from scenic vantage points such as Punta Tragara, the Gardens of Augustus, or even the summit of Monte Solaro! Be sure to take a photo of the Faraglioni (perhaps at sunset or against the light): it will surely be the cover of your Capri memory album.
3. Visit the Gardens of Augustus and admire Via Krupp
The Gardens of Augustus are one of the favorite spots for visitors to take that iconic photo with the Faraglioni in the background. But that’s not all! Consisting of a series of flower-filled terraces overlooking the sea, from here you can enjoy a unique view of Marina Piccola Bay and the extraordinary hairpin turns of Via Krupp. Via Krupp takes its name from a German industrialist, Friedrich Alfred Krupp, who used to spend his vacations on the island of Capri. Since he moored his yacht at Marina Piccola and found it inconvenient to reach his hotel from there, he asked engineer Emilio Mayer to build a road connecting Marina Piccola to the area of the Gardens of Augustus. Et voilà! By cutting through the bare rock, Mayer designed this road, one of the most incredible in the world: a series of extremely tight hairpin turns that climb a vertical drop of about 100 meters and wind their way fascinatingly along the entire rock face. In short, it is a truly unique feat of engineering and—above all—one of great visual impact: impossible to miss!
4. Visit Anacapri and hike up Monte Solaro
Anacapri is the island’s other municipality (I told you about it here!) and is located in the hilly area. Here, the atmosphere is more peaceful and authentic; I recommend strolling along Via Giuseppe Orlandi, the pedestrian street that runs through the historic center, and visiting places of interest, such as Villa San Michele, with its panoramic views and meticulously tended gardens, or the Casa Rossa, a villa painted in Pompeian red and built in a variety of architectural styles. Saint Michael’s Church is also worth a visit: you’ll be amazed by its magnificent majolica floor!
Finally, if you’re not afraid of heights, you can have a truly incredible experience in Anacapri: hop on the chairlift and reach the summit of Mount Solaro in just 12 minutes! Riding the chairlift is truly exhilarating, and during the ride you can admire the island in all its splendor. Monte Solaro is, in fact, the highest point on Capri, standing at 589 meters above sea level, and from here you can even see the Gulf of Naples, the Sorrento Peninsula, and the Amalfi Coast! A tip: make sure the chairlift is running by checking with the tourist information offices in Marina Grande or in Piazzetta. Otherwise, if you’re up for it or love hiking, you can walk to the summit—it’s about a 1.5-hour hike.
5. Going for a swim at Marina Piccola
Capri has a sea with incredible shades of blue! If the weather is nice, I highly recommend taking a dip, preferably at Marina Piccola. The pebble beach features fully equipped beach clubs and small seaside restaurants, as well as a stretch of public beach (though, of course, the space fills up early in the morning during the high season!). Relaxing by the sea in Capri is an unmissable experience for all sunbathers and snorkelers, but even just taking a swim in its crystal-clear waters with the Faraglioni in front of you will be magnificent: you’re sure to feel nothing but positive vibes!
In short, these 5 experiences truly capture the soul of the island: with its nature, elegance, panoramic views, and crystal-clear sea, Capri will fill your heart with beauty!
